INTRODUCTION AND REVISION
I. Objectives: By the end of the lesson, Ss will be able to know the content of the books, and know how to study English with ‘Tiếng Anh 9 ‘ books.

 	A.Class activities: 
 + Ask Ss to scan their books . Then the teacher introduces these books.
A1. The components of the textbook : 
The complete learning set of Tiếng Anh 9 consists of The student’s book , the workbook and the CD. 
 	1.THE STUDENT’S BOOK 
The student’s book contains:
+ The book map.
+ 12 topic- based Units, each covering 8 sections to be learned in seven 45 – minute lessons
+4 Reviews, each providing revision and further practice of the previous three units .
+ Glossary: giving meaning and phonetic transcription of the new words in the units
 	2. THE WORKBOOK
The workbook mirrors and reinforces the content of the Student’s book. It offers:
+ further practice for the language and skills taught in class, and 
+ four addition tests for student’s self- assessment.
 	3. The CD.
A2. The components of each unit :
+ Section1 : Getting started
It begins with a conversation followed by the activities which introduces the topic of the unit. It presents the vocabulary and the grammar items to be learned and practised through the skills and activities of the unit.
+ Section 2: A closer look 1
A closer look 1 presents and practises the vocabulary and pronunciation of the unit. A grammar item may also be included in this section.
+ Section3: A closer look 2
This section deals with the main grammar point(s) of the unit. There are clearly explicit grammar tables and exercises. The ‘ Remember’ boxes appear wherever necessary and help Ss to avoid common errors.
+ Section4: culture & communication
This section help Ss use the functional language in everyday life contexts and consolidate what they have learned in the previous sections. It also gives Ss opportunities to learn and apply the cultural aspects of the language to their lives, and provides cultural information about Viet Nam and other countries in the world.
+ Section5: Skills 1
Reading and Speaking skills 
+ Section 6: Skills 2 
Skills 2 composed of listening (receptive skill) and writing (productive skill)
+ Section 7: Looking back and Project.
- Looking back recycles the language from the previous sections and links with the topics. Various activities and exercises help Ss consolidate and apply what they have learnt in the unit
- The Project helps Ss to improve their ability to work by themselves and in a team, and extend their imagination in a field related to the unit subject.
A3: Methods of learning: 
 	To be keen on, and good at English, each student should:
Review the previous lesson before going to class. This means each student must be sure that they have done their exercises, new words are leanrt by heart . 
Have a look at new lesson to find down what difficulties and what you want to ask the teacher if it is not easy for you to understand.
Join the activities in class (pair / group work). Don’t be shy. Ask the teacher or friends something you feel difficult.
Try to speak English with friends, and teacher in class.
Listen to the teacher‘s explaining or his / her requests carefully.
Listen to the CD everyday to become familiar with the sounds, rymths and intonation of English.
Be prepared to work in pairs or in groups.

- Have Ss look at the picture in their books and ask: What are Mai and Tom doing ?
+ They are seeing some photos. / They are talking about some places in the world.
- Ask Ss to name the cities in the photos and ask them to support their answers.
* Activity 2 : Write T or F:
- Tell them to look at the photos and the texts in order to find the answers individually and then share their answers with their partners before discussing as a class. T may ask them to correct the false sentences.
* Activity 3 : Name the continents:
- Ask Ss to work in pais to name the continents and ask them the Vietnamese translations of these names.
* Activity 4. Match the words to the names of the places:
- Write ‘Asia, Viet Nam, Hue, Ha Noi, Thong Nhat Palace on the board and ask Ss which is the continent, which is the country , which is the city, which is the capital, and which is the place of interest.
- Ask Ss to do the matching and give feedback .
- Practise saying the words then ask them to locate the places on the map.

VOCABULARY 
1.Look at the following pie chart on leisure activities in the US and answer the questions. 
- T asks Ss to work in pairs to examine the pie chart closer to understand its contents.
- Ask Ss to answer the questions that follow the chart.
- T may elicit information by asking questions such as:
+ What is the pie chart about?
+ What do the different coloured sections of the chart refer to?
+ How are these sections calculated?
+ What does the “note” Tell you? 
+ What does the “Source” Tell you? 
2. Complete the table with information from the pie chart.
- Ss work individually to complete the task . After giving corrective feedback, T draws their attention to the part of speech of the words mentioned ( e.g. relaxing comes from the verb relax with- ing added ,and it refers to the activity)
- T introduces the concept of gerund (v-ing). T gives some examples where a gerund is transformed from a verb and used as a noun.
3. Look at the words. Match them to the category labels. 
- T has Ss to cover the category labels and look at the words and try to guess what these words have in common 
- T may ask : + What is the common verb we often use with these?
	+ How can we use this verb to describe the activity?
	+ What do we often do these with? 
	+ Where do we often do these? 
- Ss work in pairs to do the task . After finishing, T encourages them to add more words in each category.
4. How much time do you spend a day on leisure activities? What are the three activities that you do the most? Share your ideas with a partner. 
- This task can be done as a mingle activity. Ss write down how much time they spend on leisure on an average day, and the three activities they do most. 
PRONUNCIATION: 
5. Complete the words under the pictures with /pr/ /br/. Listen to check your answers and repeat.
- Ss work individually to complete this task. Once they have finished, Ss work in pairs to complete their answers. Ss listen to the recording to check and then repeat. T pauses the recording to drill difficult items. 
6. Listen and repeat. 
- Ss practice the word with the clusters first, then they repeat the whole sentence. 
Ss move around and talk with at least three other classmates to find out who spend most time on leisure and what the most popular activities in the class are.

I. Warm up: Make sentences with V-ing used as a noun 
- The class is divided into 2 teams. The team has more correct sentences will be the winner.
II. New lesson:
- T asks Ss to answer the 2 questions:
-T asks Ss to analyse the two sentences from getting started and tell the differences between them.
- T explains that in English if we want to follow a verb with another action ,we must use a gerund or an infinitive. There are certain verbs that can only be followed by one or the other, and these verbs must be memorized.
1. Read the conversation in getting started again. Underline the dependent clause in each sentence below. Say whether it is a dependent clause of concession, purpose, reason, or time.
- T asks Ss to read the getting started and underline the verbs of liking followed by gerunds or to-infinitives that they find in the text 
-T goes through the Look out box with Ss and tell them that Verbs of liking/disliking are often followed by gerunds, but verbs such as love, like, hate, start, prefer may go with gerunds or to-infinitives with almost no change in meaning. 
- Ss give examples for both cases and encourages Ss to give their own examples.
- T introduces Ss to the learning tip box and asks them to differentiate the differences in iterm of degree these verbs of liking/disliking 
2. Tick (ü) the appropriate box.Then listen to check. 
- Ss work individually and then compare the answers with their partners.
 -Then T play the recording for Ss to check their answers.
3. Write the correct form of the verbs. 
- Ss work in pairs to complete the task, then T gives feedback to Ss as a class 
4.Write sentences about what you like or don’t like doing in your freetime, beginning with the following. Then share what you have written with your partner. This task can be done in groups of 5 or 6. Ss must work individually at first and write each sentence on a strip of paper, then in their group mix up the strips. Each Ss picks up and reads out a sentence, then they guess who wrote that sentence. 
5. Look at the following e- mail that Minh Duc wrote to a new penfriend. 
-T has Ss quickly familiarize themselves with the e-mail by asking: “ who wrote this e-mail? To whom? What is it about? -Ss scan the e-mail to find the answers. 
a. There are 6 grammar mistakes in his e-mail, can you find and correct them
- Ss work individually and compare their answer with a classmate. 
b. Answer the questions. 
- Ss read the e-mail again and answer the questions 
6. Write a similar e-mail to tell your friends about your freetime, using the verbs of liking + gerunds or verbs of liking + to infinitives, swap your work with a partner and check for mistakes.
- Ss work individually to write the e-mail then exchange it with their partner and check for mistakes, if there is time, have them ask and answer about th e-mail afterwards, using the questions in 5b as a guide, if there is not enough time, this task can be done as a group-writing task.
GRAMMAR
Complex sentences: Review
There are different types of dependent clauses.
A dependent clause of concession begins with a subordinator: although, though, or even though. It shows an unexpected result.
Ex: Although she was tired, she finished knitting the scarf for her dad. 
Although I tried my best to encourage him not to do that, he still kept on.
* A dependent clause of purpose begins with a subordinator: so that or in order that. It tells the purpose of the action in the independent clause.
Ex: The artisan moulded the clay so that he could make a mask.
* A dependent clause of reason begins with a subordinator: because, since, or as. It answer the question “Why?”
* A dependent clause of time begins with a subordinator: when, while, before, as soon as, ect. It tells when the action described in the independent clause takes place.
1. Underline the dependent clause in each sentence below. Say whether it is a dependent clause of concession, purpose, reason, or time.

3.Read this part of the conversation from GETTING STTARTED. Pay attention to the underlined part and answer the questions.
1.What is the meaning of the underlined verb phrases?
- Set up: start something (a business, an organization )
2.Can each part of the verb phrase help you understand its meaning?
- No, the individual words in the verb do not help with comprehension. This is why they are sometimes considered difficult.
Note: A phrasal verb is a verb combined with a particle such as back, in, on, off, through, up, ect When a particle is added to the verb, the phrase has a special meaning.

- After finishing the task, Ss can add to the “netlingo” dictionary with any other abbreviations they know that they used online. Ss may work in pairs to create their own mini dictionary, They ask other pairs to guess the meaning.

1.Ask each other questions to find out the similarities and differences between your pictures.
* T starts the lesson by doing quickly the class survey on how many Ss use computers frequently and what they use them for then has Ss work in pairs to discuss the questions. T calls some pairs to share their ideas once they have finished their discussion. 
* T asks Ss to mention the benefits of using the computers or mobile phones for leisure activities and the harmful things it may bring us?
2. Read the text and choose the correct answer. 
* T asks Ss to look at the title and the picture and predict what they are going to read about a Ss named Quang: 
* Ss guess: What is Quang’s story about?
* Ss read the text and underline any words they don’t know and discuss any unfamiliar words from the text.
* Ss then work individually to choose the best answer. They need to be able to explain their choice as well. 
II. Speaking 
4. Quang and his parents are talking about how he should spend his free time. Decide which statements are from Quang and which are from his parents. 
-T explains Ss that the speech bubbles are from Quang and his parents. Ss may work in pairs or in groups, but they will need to say why they think who says what, based on the information from the passage 
-T runs through the phrases in the Language notes box with Ss. 
5.Role-play: WHAT’S THE SOLUTION? 
Quang, his parents and his teacher are discussing the impacts of his using the computer. Play the following roles. 
READING
1.Ask each other questions to find out the similarities and differences between your pictures.
- Similarities: conical hat, string, made from leaves
- Differences: 
Picture A: light green, pictures between layers, blue string, look lighter
Picture B: white, no decoration, pink string, look heavier
