THE PASSIVE VOICE

 - By the end of the lesson,Ss will be reviewed the forms, the uses of passive voice

Content
Theory:
T asks SS to observe 2 sentences in simple present tense, one is active and the other is passive
T has SS draw rules how to change into passive
T shows the diagram
T shows a summary of formula tenses in passive sentences
T shows some examples and explains how to do them
SS listen
T takes somes notes: “we can omit the following phrases: by me, by you, by us, by them, by him, by her, by people/ by someone ”
Exercises:
T gives SS some exercises to do
SS work in groups to change active sentences into passive sentences.
SS write their answers on the board
T corrects then gives feedback
Homework:
Learn: Form and rule of passive voice
Mr Smith teaches English. (Active)
English is taught by Mr Smith. (Passive)
Rule:
Be + Past Participle (pp)
S + V	+	O + P 	 + T (Active)
S be + V-3/V-ed + P + by + O + T
Tense
Form
Simple present
S + am, is, are +V3/V- ed...
Simple past
S + was, were +V3/V- ed...
Simple future
S + will be +V3/V- ed...
Present perfect
S + have/has been +V3/V- ed...
Modal verbs
S + modal verbs + be +V3/V- ed...
Examples:
1. I learn English everyday.
=> English is learnt (by me) everyday. (Passive)
2.My mother wrote that letter.
=> That letter was written by my mother. (Passive)
3.He asked me a lot of questions.
=> I was asked a lot of questions (by him). (Passive)
4.Lan will do a test tomorrow. 
=> A test will be done by Lan tomorrow. (Passive)
5.My mother has made that cake.
=> That cake has been made by my mother. (Passive)
6. They used to plant many trees in this garden.
=> Many trees used to be planted in this garden(by them). (Passive)
7. My friend can answer this question.
=> This question can be answered by my friend. (Passive)
Change these sentences into passive:
They should do their homework carefully.
=> Their homework should be done carefully.
Somebody has taken some of my books away.
=> Some of my books have been taken away.
They will hold the meeting before May Day.
=>The meeting will be held before May Day.
They have to repair the engine of the car.
=>The engine of the car has to be repaired.
The boys broke the window yesterday.
=>The window was broken by the boys yesterday.
The teacher explains the lesson.
=>The lesson is explained by the teacher.
These boys made that noise.
=>That noise was made by these boys.
People speak English all over the world.
=> English is spoken all over the world.
I can’t do these exercises quickly.
=> These exercises can’t be done quickly (by me).
They used to drink beer in England many years ago.
=>Beer used to be drunk in England many years ago.
