Although/Though/Even though: thể hiện 2 hành động trái ngược nhau về mặt nghĩa,
mặc dù
(Lưu ý: ngoài ra còn có thể dùng despite và in spite of tương đương như
Although/though/even though.)
Ex: Although they were tired, they worked overtime.
As: diễn tả 2 hành động cùng xảy ra-khi, hoặc diễn tả nguyên nhân-bởi vì
Ex: As Nam is late for school, his mother has to apologize to his teacher.
As long as: dùng diễn tả điều kiện: chừng nào mà, miễn là
Ex: As long as you’ve offered, I'll accept.
5. As soon as: dùng diễn tả quan hệ thời gian-ngay khi mà
Ex: As soon as he comes back, I'll give it to you.
6. Because/Since: dùng diễn tả nguyên nhân, lý do-bởi vì
(Lưu ý: Because/since dùng với mệnh đề, ngoài ra có thể dùng because of/due to để
diễn đạt ý tương tự.)
Ex: You can’t do that because you are mature.
7. Even if: dùng diễn tả điều kiện giả định-kể cả khi
Ex: I love you even if I die.
8. If/Unless: dùng diễn tả điều kiện-nếu/nếu không.
Ex: You’ll never know unless you try.
9. Once: dùng diễn tả ràng buộc về thời gian-một khi.
Ex: Once you’ve tried it, you cannot stop.
10. Now that: dùng diễn tả quan hệ nhân quả phụ thuộc thời gian: vì giờ đây.
Ex: I pray now that soon you’re released.
11. So that/In order that: dùng để diễn tả mục đích: để cho.
Keep quiet so that she may sleep.
12. Until: dùng diễn tả quan hệ thời gian, thường dùng với câu phủ định – cho đến khi
Ex: I’ll wait until you agree.
13. When: dùng diễn tả quan hệ thời gian – khi.
Ex: When she cries, I just can’t think!
14. Where: dùng diễn tả quan hệ về địa điểm – nơi
Ex: Where is the love, where is the friendship ? :
15. While: dùng diễn tả quan hệ thời gian: trong khi; hoặc sự ngược nghĩa giữa 2
mệnh đề: nhưng (= WHEREAS)
Ex: Reading while being alone.
16. In case/In the event that: dùng diễn tả giả định về một hành động có thể xảy ra
trong tương lai – trong trường hợp, phòng khi.
Ex: In case of genuine emergency, call 911.
