V. READING COMPREHENSION (0.25 pt)
Read the passage and choose the best answer for each question below.
The sun today is a yellow dwarf star. It is powered by thermonuclear reactions near its centre that change hydrogen into helium. The sun has existed in its present state for about 4 billion, 600 million years and is thousands of times larger than the earth.
By studying other stars, astronomers can predict what the rest of the sun’s life will be like. About 5 billion years from now, the core of the sun will shrink and become hotter. The surface temperature will fall. The higher temperature of the centre will increase the rate of thermonuclear reactions. The outer regions of the sun will expand approximately 35 million miles, about the distance to Mercury, which is the closest planet to the sun. The sun will then be a red giant star. Temperatures on the earth will become too hot for life to exist.
Once the sun has used up its thermonuclear energy as a red giant, it will begin to shrink. After it shrinks to the size of the earth, it will become a white dwarf star. The sun may throw off huge amounts of gases in violent eruptions called nova explosions as it changes from a red giant to a white dwarf.
After billions of years as a white dwarf, the sun will have used up all its fuel and will have lost its heat. Such a star is called a black dwarf. After the sun has become a black dwarf, the earth will be dark and cold. If any atmosphere remains there, it will have frozen onto the earth’s surface.
It can be inferred from the passage that the sun _______ .
A. is approximately halfway through its life as a yellow dwarf
B. has been in existence for 10 billion years
C. is rapidly changing in size and brightness
D. will continue as a yellow dwarf for another 10 billion years

	A. Its atmosphere will freeze and become solid.
	B. It will be enveloped in the expanding surface of the sun.
	C. It will become too hot for life to exist.
	D. It will be destroyed in nova explosions.
As a white dwarf, the sun will be_______.
	A. the same size as the planet Mercury
	B. thousands of times smaller than it is today
	C. around 35 million miles in diameter
	D. cold and dark
According to the passage, which of the following best describes the sequence of stages that the sun will probably pass through?

The Internet links millions of computers all over the world and allows your computer to get information stored on other computers far away. In 1981, only 213 computers were connected to the Internet. At the end of 2006, there were more than one billion Internet users. No one knows for sure exactly how many people use the Internet today.
You get on the Internet by joining a computer network which is called an Internet Service Provider (ISP). You can hook up to the ISP with a modem and your home telephone line. This is called dial-up access. Another way to hook up to the ISP is with Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) or a cable modem which bring Web pages to your computer screen much faster than a dial-up connection.
People use the Internet for different purposes such as communication, information search, and entertainment. Businesses use the Internet for advertising and electronic commerce. Organizations use the Internet for teleconferencing and telecommuting. Media and entertainment companies use the Internet for on-line news or games. Universities use the Internet to perform research, communicate, and distribute lectures.
One of the most popular uses of the Internet is sending and receiving e-mail. An e-mail message has a delivery address, just like any mail. The Internet has special computer devices called routers that can read the e-mail address, which tells the routers where the e-mail should be routed, or sent, on the Internet.
As more people are getting on the Internet, newer ways of using the Internet are being invented. For example, keeping blogs has been popular recently. A blog is a Web site which provides commentary or news on a particular subject. Some blogs are personal on-line diaries where people write their day-to-day experiences. Nearly 60 million blogs were being tracked at the end of 2006. Many bloggers said that they could not share their experiences and opinions so quickly and easily if there weren’t Internet connectivity. The Internet has really made big changes in the way many people live and work.
_______ More than one billion computers were connected to the Internet at the end of 2006.
_______ You cannot get on the Net without connecting to an ISP.

_______ People in different places can attend a meeting with the help of Internet connectivity.
