They call New York “the Big Apple”. Maybe it isn’t exactly like an apple, but it is certainly very big. There are too many people, that’s the problem. The streets are always full of cars and trucks, and you can never find a place to park.
If you have enough money, you can take a taxi. New York cabs are yellow. They look all the same. But the drivers are very different. Some were born and raised in New York, but many are newcomers to the United States. A few drive slowly, but most go very fast. Cab driving is a difficult job. It can be dangerous, too. Thieves often try to steal the drivers’ money. Drivers sometimes get hurt.
If you don’t want to take a taxi, you can go by bus or you can take the subway. The subway is quick, and it’s cheap, but parts of it are old and dirty. Lights don’t always work and there are often fires on the track. On some subway lines, there are new, clean, silver trains. But you can’t see the color of the old trains easily. There is too much dirt and too much graffiti, inside and outside.

Inventing the generator was Michael Faraday’s most important accomplishments, but he made many other discoveries about electricity. He made discoveries in the fields of chemistry, too. Among them was benzene, the starting point in the manufacture of many dyes, perfumes and explosives.
Faraday’s accomplishments seem more wonderful when we realize that he had very little schooling. He was bom in 1791 in Newington, now a part of London. His father, a blacksmith, was too poor to send him to school. So the boy went to work in a bookbinder’s shop, where he became interested in books on science.
One day young Faraday attended a lecture given by a famous scientist, Sir Humphry Davy. Faraday took very careful notes at the lecture. Back at the bookshop he made diagrams to illustrate what Davy had said. Then he bound the notes arid diagrams into a book and sent them to the great scientist. He wrote to Davy of his interest in science and asked for work.
Faraday received the thrill of his life when, on the day before Christmas in 1812, a messenger came to the bookshop with a note asking him to call on Davy the next day. As a result of this visit Faraday became an assistant in the laboratory of this great scientist. At first Faraday only washed chemistry glassware and kept the laboratory clean, but later he was given more important work to do. It was in Davy’s laboratory that Faraday received the training that enabled him to become one of the greatest scientists of all time.

V. READING COMPREHENSION (0.5 pt)
Read the passage below and choose the best answer for each question.
